Are you ready to embark on a journey to one of the UK’s most respected professions? Raising the Bar is a new documentary series that will follow aspiring barristers from all walks of life as they prepare for pupillage, the final step before qualifying to practise as a barrister. With expert mentorship from one of the UK’s top KCs, Raising the Bar will showcase the challenges, determination, and passion required to join the Bar.

Every year, thousands of people, of all ages and from every walk of life, apply for “pupillage” in sets of chambers, up and down the country. Many are tens of thousands of pounds in debt, most have tried and failed before, some more than once, but all of them have the same dream - to qualify as a barrister; a profession steeped in mystery and history, in equal measure.

Raising the Bar follows the journeys of 6 very different candidates as they complete their Bar Exams and pursue their applications for“pupillage”, the final 12-month period of on the job training in a set of chambers, which every barrister must complete, before having the right to don the famous wig and gown and to appear in court, for the very first time.

With some chambers receiving 100 applications per place for pupillage, this is one of the most competitive and, for the majority, soul destroying career paths there is. After years of study, often followed by paralegal jobs to make ends meet; for the lucky few, who make it through the initial sift of written applications, the practical exercises and the gruelling interviews by panels of established barristers, the gates to this ancient profession, will finally open. They will receive the most important document of all; a Practising Certificate, entitling them to appear as an advocate in every court in the land, up to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.
